“With a hymn composed in the eighth or ninth century, thus for over a thousand years, the Church has greeted Mary, the Mother of God, as “Star of the Sea”: Ave maris stella. Human life is a journey. Towards what destination? How do we find the way? Life is like a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route. The true stars of our life are the people who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope. Certainly, Jesus Christ is the true light, the sun that has risen above all the shadows of history. But to reach him we also need lights close by—people who shine with his light and so guide us along our way. Who more than Mary could be a star of hope for us? With her “yes” she opened the door of our world to God himself; she became the living Ark of the Covenant, in whom God took flesh, became one of us, and pitched his tent among us (cf. Jn 1:14).

Pope Benedict XVI from his Encyclical Letter, Spe Salvi

Fr. Nathaniel Roberts: Mass of Thanksgiving

Fr. Nathaniel Roberts will offer two Masses of Thanksgiving for his ordination to the priesthood at St. Mary’s on June 22nd at 6pm and June 23rd at 9am.  Please join us in celebrating the ordination of Fr. Roberts who grew up in this parish.

The Ordination Mass will be Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and live streamed on the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington YouTube channel. Click here to watch on June 15th.

In the Divine Will, I would like to thank God for the big opportunity to come here and help the community of the Basilica St. Mary Star of the Sea for a short period of time, that allow me to embrace faith and love for Our Lord, reviving the love for the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation!

I will never forget the challenges to do this, in the name of Our Lord. I will be happy to find out that this Basilica continue with the seed that He already planted in the hearts of the faithful and I asked Our Blessed Mother to help you.

My new challenge will be helping the youth in the University of Miami as a chaplain of the Lord, bringing hope and love to their lives through the Sacrament of the Eucharist, as parochial vicar of Saint Augustine Parish, stepping in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Humbly, please keep me in your prayers.

Father Mario Avila Vivero.

Rev. Milton Jose Martinez: Mass of Thanksgiving

Congratulations to our newly ordained priest Fr. Milton Martinez who served at our Parish and at the Star of the Sea Foundation for two summers as a seminarian.

Fr. Milton will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Basilica on Sunday, June 16th at the 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon in Spanish.

We rejoice and thank God for the gift of our newly ordained priest. May God bless them and make their ministry very fruitful.

Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden because of their disobedience. But Jesus says in today’s Gospel that when we are obedient to God’s will—when we use our gifts to serve one another—we are part of His family. “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.” This is the gift and fruit of Baptism.
