The Secular Franciscan Order (SFO), formerly known as the Third Order of St. Francis, is an official Order within the Catholic Church, established by St. Francis of Assisi himself early in the thirteenth century.

The Fraternity was canonically established, in the Archdiocese of Miami, under Archbishop Favalora during the assignment of Fr. Bill Linares and two Franciscan Brothers here at  St. Mary’s in 1996. Despite the eventual re-assignment of these devoted men, the Fraternity has continued to meet regularly and in 2016 will joyfully celebrate twenty years of continual service.
