“With a hymn composed in the eighth or ninth century, thus for over a thousand years, the Church has greeted Mary, the Mother of God, as “Star of the Sea”: Ave maris stella. Human life is a journey. Towards what destination? How do we find the way? Life is like a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route. The true stars of our life are the people who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope. Certainly, Jesus Christ is the true light, the sun that has risen above all the shadows of history. But to reach him we also need lights close by—people who shine with his light and so guide us along our way. Who more than Mary could be a star of hope for us? With her “yes” she opened the door of our world to God himself; she became the living Ark of the Covenant, in whom God took flesh, became one of us, and pitched his tent among us (cf. Jn 1:14).

Pope Benedict XVI from his Encyclical Letter, Spe Salvi

WELCOME FR. MARIO AVILA VIVERO

My name is Mario Avila Vivero and I was born in Santiago, Chile in 1980. I was studying electronic engineering when I heard the call from God to become a priest. And so, I entered the Seminary, where I studied philosophy and theology.

On March 10, 2011, I was ordained as a priest at my home parish, in Chile. As a priest I have missioned in Chile, Canada and in the United States in different places such as California, Philadelphia and Miami.

I thank our Heavenly Father and Archbishop Thomas Wenski for choosing me as temporary parochial administrator for our Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea. I thank Fr. John Baker who has so graciously taught me all about our Basilica.

I also thank Fr. Feliere Louis, Deacon Peter Batty, the Basilica School president Robert Wright and principal Joanna Morris, the Holy Spirit Sisters, the staff, volunteers, ministries and groups, and all the people at the Basilica and School who have made me feel so welcomed and are helping me to accomplish my duty as administrator.

In the Divine Will, I pray for all of you and for all who come to the Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea. I entrust myself to your prayers,

Fr. Mario Avila Vivero
Administrator, Basilica St. Mary Star of the Sea

HE IS RISEN!

Very Early in the morning after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with precious oils.

The reward of this good and conscientious steward was to be among the first to know that Jesus had been raised from the dead!

ALLELUIA!

Easter Sunday

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, we rejoice because Our Lord Jesus is truly risen, Alleluia! Alleluia!

Throughout Holy Week, we have meditated on how much Our God and Savior Jesus Christ loves us to the point of remaining with us in the Miracle of the Eucharist and dying on the cross for our sins. But also, nowadays it is necessary for us to die to our sins, so that we may begin to live our lives in Our Lord Jesus Christ, a life according to the Will of the Father.

Our Lord Jesus has triumphed over sin and death and has opened the gates of Heaven for us who believe in Him and keep His commandments.

May Our Blessed Mother, Mary Star of the Sea, lead us in living our lives with the light of the Holy Spirit, so at the moment of our death we may reach the eternal life in Heaven.

On behalf of Father John Baker, Father Feliere Louis, Deacon Peter Batty, Sisters Mary, Euphemia and Selina, and of all who are privileged to serve here, may the Risen Christ fill you with hope, joy and every grace you need this Easter Season and always,

Peace be with you,

Father Mario Avila Vivero, Administrator.

Easter Celebration

Easter is a seven-week season of joy and grace. Starting with the Triduum in Holy Week and ending with Pentecost. We keep celebrating so that we might continue to enter into the meaning of the resurrection and to deepen the way it touches our daily lives. After Easter Week’s resurrection stories, the first reading for the rest of this long and glorious season is from the Acts of the Apostles. Every day we see how Jesus’ followers reacted to his death, the challenges to their witness and the unexpected courage that comes to them. John’s Gospel is used for the entire Easter Season, the one time of year we can enter into his poetic and layered stories on a daily basis. Sunday, this 50 day season has been called “the radiant center of the liturgical year.”

Easter only begins with Easter Sunday. These daily prayers and meditations come together to remind us that Jesus is with us. He is not dead, but alive. And, that makes all the difference in the world in how much hope and courage we have, before any struggle, any possible fear of death. In these 50 days, we are Easter People!
